Tolerates almost any soil type. Prefers sun or part shade in coastal sites, and part shade in inland sites. Seed collected from C. papillosus (C. p. var. roweanus) collected at Tilden Botanical Garden in 1965 by Lady Cynthia postan. Other parent thought to be C. thyrsiflorus var. griseus.
