Ceanothus ‘Joan Mirov’

Hybrid of Ceanothus foliosus and Ceanothus griseus. Joan Mirov is a naturally occurring hybrid of the coastal C. griseus and the inland growing C. foliosus that was selected and introduced by Rodger Raiche at UC Berkeley. It will grow to 4′-6′ tall and 1′-12′ wide. It responds well to pruning and may be the most disease resistant ceanothus to date. Very dark, shiny 1/2″ leaves neatly covering slender stems creates a great large scale bank cover. In spring the plant is blanketed with very dark buds and rich, indigo blue flowers. Plant in light soil and protect from the hot afternoon sun. It grows well in coastal areas but may need more rigorous testing in inland valley conditions. Hardy to 15 degrees F. Grows best in sandy, coarse-grained or other fast draining soil. Prefers part shade in coastal sites, and part shade in inland sites. Selected by Roger Raiche near salt point (sonoma Co) and introduced by UC Botanical Garden. Hybrid of C. foliosus x thyrsiflorus var. griseus (C. griseus).
